The pet food industry is one of the most marketing-heavy sectors in consumer goods. Understanding what a label actually says โ versus what the packaging implies โ is one of the most useful things a pet owner can learn.
The Anatomy of a Pet Food Label
Regulations in the EU require pet food manufacturers to list a minimum set of information on every package: product name, species it's intended for, net weight, "best before" date, storage conditions, name and address of the manufacturer, and a list of ingredients and analytical constituents (the guaranteed analysis). Every other claim โ "premium", "natural", "gourmet", "vet recommended" โ is marketing and carries no regulatory definition.
The ingredient list is the most informative part of the label, but it requires some interpretation. Ingredients are listed by weight before processing, which means a high-moisture ingredient like "fresh chicken" may appear first even if it contributes relatively little protein after the water is removed during manufacturing. The same protein source listed as "chicken meal" (which has had most moisture removed) weighs less but often represents a higher concentration of actual protein.
What to Look for in the Ingredient List
A few rules that make the ingredient list readable:
- Named protein sources first. The first ingredient (or the first two or three) should be a named meat source: "chicken", "beef", "salmon", "turkey". Generic terms like "meat and animal derivatives" or "poultry by-products" indicate lower-quality, variable protein sources. Not necessarily harmful โ but less transparent.
- Whole grains vs. fragmented grains. "Brown rice" is a whole grain. "Rice flour", "rice bran", and "rice gluten" are fractions that contribute less nutritional value and are sometimes listed separately to push them lower on the ingredient list, where they appear less prominent than they actually are by total quantity. This practice โ called "ingredient splitting" โ is legal and common.
- Artificial additives. EU-approved artificial colourants (E102, E110, E124, E127, E129, E133, E142, E155) have no nutritional function and exist solely to make food more visually appealing to the owner, not the pet. Some are associated with behavioural sensitivities in sensitive animals. Preservatives like ethoxyquin (E324), BHA (E320), and BHT (E321) are permitted but worth noting; vitamin E (tocopherol) and rosemary extract are safer natural alternatives.
- Fillers. Corn starch, potato starch, and tapioca are digestible carbohydrate sources that primarily provide energy and structure. They are not harmful but add little nutritional value beyond calories, and high-filler diets may leave a pet feeling less satiated than a higher-protein alternative at the same calorie count.
The guaranteed analysis (crude protein %, crude fat %, crude fibre %, moisture %) allows comparison between foods only when you account for moisture. Wet food typically shows 8โ10% protein because it's 75โ80% water; dry food shows 25โ35% protein because moisture is mostly removed. To compare them fairly, calculate the "dry matter basis": divide the nutrient % by (100 minus moisture %). A wet food with 9% protein and 78% moisture has (9 รท 22 ร 100) = 41% protein on a dry matter basis โ higher than most dry foods.
Life Stage and Breed-Specific Foods
Pet foods labelled "complete" for a specific life stage (puppy/kitten, adult, senior) must meet minimum nutritional standards set by FEDIAF (European Pet Food Industry Federation) for that stage. Life stage labelling is meaningful and worth following. Puppies genuinely need more calcium, phosphorus, and protein than adult dogs; kittens have different taurine and arachidonic acid requirements than adult cats.
Breed-specific formulas are primarily a marketing differentiation. The kibble shape varies by breed size (meaningful, because large breeds benefit from larger kibble that encourages chewing), but the nutritional differences between, say, a "Golden Retriever formula" and a standard large-breed adult food are typically minimal.
Wet vs. Dry vs. Raw: A Brief Map

No single "best" food exists for all pets. A genuinely good pet food has a named protein source as the first ingredient, meets FEDIAF nutritional standards for the appropriate life stage, and your pet thrives on it โ good coat, healthy weight, normal digestion, consistent energy. If all three are true, the marketing on the bag is largely irrelevant.
